Congratulations on your engagement! As you start planning your engagement session, you’ve chosen the perfect location—San Diego. Known for its stunning coastal views and year-round perfect weather, San Diego offers a variety of beautiful settings to capture your special moments. From picturesque beaches to unique urban spots, there’s something for every couple. Let’s explore some of the top locations in this sunny city to make your engagement photos truly memorable. As you go through this guide I share some of my favorite locations and tips as a San Diego wedding photographer.
I grew up in San Diego, specifically in Chula Vista, and moved to Sacramento in 2020. Despite the move, my heart remains in San Diego, and I travel back frequently for photoshoots. Growing up, I spent countless days at Coronado Beach and took many field trips to Balboa Park. My own engagement photos were taken at Sunset Cliffs, a location that I hold dearly. As a California wedding photographer, I don’t charge any extra travel fees for my San Diego clients. If I’m already in town – most likely to visiting family and friends – I also waive the travel fee. I love capturing the beauty and essence of San Diego in my photos, and I’m always excited to work with new clients there. Nerizza and Travor’s engagement session was an enjoyable experience, capturing their fun-spirited and casual nature. We started at Raised by Wolves, a unique bar known for its stylish interior and vibrant atmosphere. The couple wore chic, fun outfits that perfectly matched the bar’s lively vibe. After capturing some great shots there, we moved to La Jolla Windandsea, a beautiful beach location. They changed into casual attire, perfect for the relaxed beach setting. The contrast between the bar and the beach provided a diverse and exciting collection of photos, showcasing their personalities and the variety of San Diego’s scenery.
As a San Diego wedding photographer my favorite location of all has to be Balboa Park. It is a treasure trove of beautiful locations for engagement portraits. Here are some of the top spots within the park:
Crowd Tip: Balboa Park can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. To avoid the crowds and capture the serene beauty of the park, consider scheduling your session on a weekday or early in the morning at sunrise. This ensures a more peaceful atmosphere and the best lighting conditions for your photos.
No permits are needed to shoot in Balboa Park, making it an accessible and convenient option for your engagement session.
Mission San Diego de Alcalá is a historic and picturesque location for engagement photos. As the first of the 21 California Missions, it offers a unique blend of history and beauty. The white adobe walls, beautiful gardens, and iconic bell tower create a timeless and serene backdrop for your portraits.
Crowd Tip: While the mission is a popular tourist destination, it is generally less crowded than other attractions in San Diego. However, visiting during weekdays or early mornings can help you avoid larger groups and ensure a more private photo session. No permits are required to shoot here, making it an easy and attractive option for capturing your special moments.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is about a two-hour drive from San Diego, but it’s well worth the trip. Couples choose Anza-Borrego for its unique desert landscape, dramatic canyons, and stunning vistas. The best time to shoot here is in the spring, especially if there’s a wildflower bloom, which adds vibrant colors to the desert scenery.
Leave No Trace: It’s important to respect the natural environment. Stay on designated trails, avoid picking wildflowers, and pack out all trash. Preserving the beauty of Anza-Borrego ensures it remains a breathtaking location for future visitors and photo sessions.
Shooting at bars is fun and trendy, offering a unique, stylish backdrop. Flash photos in these settings can look really cool and editorial. However, it isn’t easy because it requires permission, must usually be done before they open, and sometimes incurs a fee. It will be the client’s responsibility to obtain the necessary permissions. Here are three top bars in San Diego for your engagement session:
The Fairmont Grand Del Mar boasts stunning outdoor architecture, perfect for natural light photos. The Mediterranean-inspired design, complete with lush gardens and elegant facades, provides a beautiful and sophisticated backdrop. Indoors, the hotel offers stylish settings like its upscale restaurants and bars, which are ideal for trendy flash pictures that capture a modern and luxurious ambiance.
Please note, there is a fee of $800 per hour to shoot at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.
The Lafayette Hotel offers a stylish and unique setting for engagement photos. The hotel features a chic bar, beautifully designed rooms, and a retro-inspired pool deck, all perfect for trendy and memorable photos. With its Palm Springs chic vibe, the vibrant decor and vintage ambiance provide a distinctive backdrop. There is a fee of $400 per hour to shoot at the Lafayette Hotel, and clients must book a minimum one-night stay.
The Imperial Sand Dunes, located about a two-hour drive from San Diego, offer a dramatic and unique desert landscape for engagement photos. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to navigate the sandy terrain. The best times to shoot are early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and capture the stunning light. This location provides an expansive and otherworldly backdrop, perfect for adventurous and dynamic photo sessions.
